Press Release: PhageEU is joining EFSA stakeholder community on applications for food and feed products

Brussels, 16 June 2026

PhageEU has joined the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) stakeholder community on applications for food and feed products. The decision by EFSA to accept the PhageEU application is a significant recognition of our members’ expertise and of the role that phages can play in ensuring safe and sustainable food production in the EU, as well as in improving animal health via feed applications.

The stakeholder community is a collaborative forum bringing together members with expertise and a professional interest in topics related to the applications for food and feed products which require authorisation prior entering the EU market. Community members will have the opportunity to share their views, experiences and suggestions with EFSA and their peers, working together towards the common goal of streamlining the process and improving applications quality.

Dr. Michael Fink, PhageEU President, has been appointed the standing PhageEU representative in the stakeholder group.

“I am very happy, that PhageEU application has been assessed positively by EFSA and that we can join the stakeholders’ group. This is a great opportunity for PhageEU to provide expertise on food and fed applications on phages and to pave the way for future authorisations” said Dr. Michael Fink. “We are especially keen to start discussions on all possible use of bacteriophages along the production chain of food or feed products, each with different regulatory requirements, including safety aspects, risk evaluation of host strains and the importance of the host strain for the product quality.”

Being part of the EFSA stakeholder community is a great opportunity for PhageEU to engage with EFSA’s work and advocate for the better recognition of phage applications in food and feed. We remain committed to being an active and constructive member of the community.

Phage EU is a coalition of likeminded stakeholders who represent phages in industry, the scientific community and civil society. We want to realize the full potential of phages in Europe.
